Baptized in Blood – (Self-titled album) & Abigail Williams – In the Absence of Light
Album Reviews by Joseph Pipan
Here are two very different albums from two very different bands. First is the offering from Canadian metal band Baptized in Blood, which happens to be a self-titled album. This is also the London, Ontario, Canada- based band’s first album. The track list is as follows:
1.     Up Shirts Down Skirts
2.     Dirty’s Back
3.     Game On
4.     Only Cure
5.     Down and Out
6.     Mental
7.     Last Line Lady
8.     My Salute
9.     Go it Alone
10.  Will of a Demon
11.  Sinking Ships
12.  Event Horizon
This band sounds like an All that Remains copycat, but with only screaming vocals. The guitar work sounds very similar to All that Remains, albeit with the occasional original melodic hook and the typical repeating patterns. The track list has some oddly named songs, with “Up Shirts Down Skirts” and “Dirty’s Back” being among them. Baptized in Blood doesn’t have a whole lot going for them in terms of sounding original, but the guitar work is satisfactory. Overall, the album sounds like a spirited effort by the band to either cash in on the All that Remains sound or somehow break away from it.
Rating: **
Next is the latest offering from New York-based black metal band Abigail Williams. Titled In the Absence of Light, it is the band’s second album after its debut album In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns. The track list is as follows:
1.     Hope The Great Betrayal
2.     Final Destiny of the Gods
3.     The Mysteries that Bind the Flesh
4.     Infernal Divide
5.     In Death Comes the Great Silence
6.     What Hells Await Me
7.     An Echo in Our Legends
8.     Malediction

The band is named after the primary accuser in the Salem Witch trials, adequate subject matter for a black metal band…and that’s about the only interesting thing about them. Abigail Williams sounds like just about any other black metal band, with the addition of a symphonic element that barely separates it from other like-minded groups. In the Absence of Light, while a decent sampling of black metal, is generic and dull.

Locals get LOUD: Mandatory Metal at the State Theater
Round Two: The Return
October 8, 2010 – The State Theater (Falls Church, VA)
Review by Joseph Pipan

On a bimonthly basis, the State Theater in Falls Church, VA is shaken to its foundations by a sonic onslaught from within. On those chosen nights the floors shake, the walls rumble, and the stage is home to the decibel daredevils from the Mid-Atlantic metal circuit. Created by State Theater employee Alan Margazano, the event has gained a strong following among DC-area metalheads and decibel junkies. Round One in August was a success, and Round Two in October promised to be just as explosive.
This time around, the bands featured were Deranged Theory, Immortal Decay, Trihexyn, and Apothys. Deranged Theory, a metal group from Northern Virginia, opened the event with an enthusiastic set-list featuring songs influenced by movies, video games, and other forms of “badassery”. They even had a song about Starcraft II. The performance was a good one, but the vocals sounded a little forced at times.  Immortal Decay took the stage next. Their brand of death metal was fast and furious, with very little time between songs and a tendency to just keep chugging through the set-list. After they powered through their songs, the audience was left with ringing ears and spinning heads. The last two bands of the night were the headliners. Trihexyn and Apothys have gained a local reputation for their talent and showmanship, and they certainly did not disappoint. Both performances were distorted onslaughts that finished the night of metal mayhem with a bang.
Round Two of Mandatory Metal at the State Theater was a success. This reviewer hopes to see you  at Round Three. And remember to bring earplugs…because these locals really do get LOUD.

Pitbull's Album Review -- Dimmu Borgir - Abrahadabra

Dimmu Borgir: Abrahadabra (2010)
Album Review by Joseph Pipan

Norwegian Symphonic Black Metal band Dimmu Borgir has returned with a vengeance. After the successes of previous albums such as Death Cult Armageddon (2003) and In Sorte Diaboli (2007), expectations were high for the 2010 offering. The band’s newest studio album, Abrahadabra, is a haunting addition to the band’s legend and a fitting “Renewal.” The track list as is follows:
1.     Xibir
2.     Born Treacherous
3.     Gateways
4.     Chess with the Abyss
5.     Dimmu Borgir
6.     Ritualist
7.     The Demiurge Molecule
8.     A Jewel Traced Through Coal
9.     Renewal
10.  Endings and Continuations

This music on this album is beautifully haunting, chillingly eerie and well-produced. Symphonic elements are blended seamlessly with black metal style, producing an enjoyably atmospheric symphonic black metal offering. This is true Dimmu Borgir.

Thrash Metal Album Review:

Forbidden: Omega Wave (2010)
Album Review by Joseph Pipan
Bay-Area Thrash metal band Forbidden is back again. Omega Wave is the first full-length album that the band has released since their Green album in 1997. Their earlier studio albums were Forbidden Evil (1988), Twisted into Form (1990), Point of No Return (1992), and Distortion (1994). The band was originally formed by drummer Jason Pittman and Guitarist Robb Flynn (later of Machine Head). The latest lineup attempts to make Omega Wave a return to the thrashing form that made the band famous in the 90s. The track list is as follows:
  1. Alpha Century
  2. Forsaken at the Gates
  3. Overthrow
  4. Adapt or Die
  5. Swine
  6. Chatter
  7. Dragging My Casket
  8. Hopenosis
  9. Immortal Wounds
  10. Behind the Mask
  11. Inhuman Race
  12. Omega Wave
Omega Wave is a pure thrash offering, and it does not disappoint. The album brings back memories of thrash metal’s golden age. And now, in a time where musicians must “Adapt or Die,” Forbidden has adapted their sound while staying true to their roots in Bay-area thrash. It’s time to ride the Omega Wave.

Before They Were Famous...

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 9:54 AM

Cellokid and I were checking out Billboard.com and came across this article.  Thought it would be interesting to see what some of today's hottest pop singers were like before they became big...

Here is Lady Gaga on a 2006 episode of the MTV show "Boiling Points".

Before she went "Gaga" and put pop music in its place, Stefani Germanotta got her start performing on the Lower East Side. Here, the singer looks more like a Flashdance extra than the "Just Dance" hit-maker she would become as she plays her original song, "Hollywood," for anyone who will listen at a NYC rock club.

Way back in 2000, 13-year old Kesha performed in a middle school talent show. Anyone else find it surprising and a bit strange she's performing Radiohead's "Karma Police?" She looks nothing like she does now...

Here is Aubrey Graham, better known as Drake.  Before he became hip-hop's breakout star of 2009, he was a quadriplegic on the hit teen series "Degrassi: The Next Generation". This is one of the earlier episodes (I'm thinking Season 2 from 2002-2003)  This is Drake's first documented "rap" for the upcoming talent show.

Another rap he did for another talent show with Degrassi girlfriend Ashley Brooks.  Sorry the quality is so bad...it was the only video I could find on YouTube...

In the last seven years, singer and dancer Chris Brown has gone from adorable R&B-boy next door to sexy, hit-making crooner. That's not to say that he didn't have it going on at the tender age of 13, though, which is when he made the video for "Whose Girl Is That?"

Plenty of stars got their first taste of the spotlight on Ed McMahon's "Star Search": Britney, Justin, and Beyonce. At the age of 12, Ms. Knowles brought her pipes and her Houston hip-hop group Girl's Tyme to living rooms across the country. And while they didn't win the competition, they won elsewhere -- Girl's Tyme eventually became Destiny's Child, and we all know what happened from there.  This is from 1993.

Before Fergie Ferg was added to the Black Eyed Peas' lineup, Stacy Ferguson was a bleach blonde R&B singer struggling to make it in an all-girls group called Wild Orchid. Here's a video the group made in 1997 for a single called "Talk To Me."

Speaking of Wild Orchid, they hosted a Saturday morning talent show that used to come on Fox Family (before it was ABC Family) "The Great Pretenders". It was on in the late 90's.   Nobody seems to remember this show!  I used to watch it every Saturday morning, complete with a bowl of cereal and OJ.

This is going back even further.  All of you late 20-somethings remember this show.  Fergie got her start on a 1980's kids show on the Disney Channel appropriately titled "Kids Incorporated".  Jennifer Love Hewitt also got her start on this show.  Here is Fergie when was 9 years old.

Speaking of the Disney Channel, I gotta mention the Mickey Mouse Club.  Lots of talented stars got their big break on that show.  Anybody from Justin Timberlake, to Britney, to Christina, to JC Chasez (from NSync), to Keri Russell (Felicity).  Interestingly, Jessica Simpson tried out for the show but didn't make it.  Here is Britney, Justin and Christina from their MMC days in 1993.

More to come later...Next edition is gonna feature rock stars "Before They Were Famous"

Christina Aguilera is BAAAACK

0

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 8:35 AM

In 2006, Christina Aguilera went Back to Basics, putting a modern spin on soul and swing-era music. Her new Bionic boasts a futuristic album cover and buzzing first single that show off her renewed desire to hit the dance club with high-powered beats from the 21st century. Aguilera premiered first single “Not Myself Tonight” on her official site yesterday, singing, “I’m not myself tonight, tonight I’m not the same girl,” a nod to her musical shift in the past four years.  It appears as though “Xtina” is back and is ready to duke it out for club spins with Lady Gaga and Ke$ha.

“Not Myself Tonight” was co-written by Ester Dean, who had a hand in Rihanna’s “Rude Boy,” and club king Polow Da Don, who also produced the track. Bionic will feature Aguilera combining songs written by electro-pop and rockers like Sia, Le Tigre and Ladytron with production from bona fide hitmakers like Tricky Stewart, Switch and Linda Perry.

The single will be available on iTunes starting April 13th, while Bionic will follow on June 8th.

Nicki Minaj FINALLY releases first single entitled "Massive Attack"

0

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 12:03 PM

Not only does Nicki Minaj hang out with Lil Wayne and Drake, but according to her new song, "Massive Attack," she also chills with Mr. Miyagi and the Phantom of the Opera.

The wait is over: Minaj has released her first official single. The track hit the Net on Monday night, and Funk Master Flex blasted off on Hot 97 with it. The track fuses hip-hop and dance, and Minaj adds a little international flavor by spitting some lyrics with a Caribbean accent.

"So, so hot in here it feels like a jungle/ Me don't like boys that ain't jumbo," she raps. "You know I got the ammo/ That's why I bulletproof the Lambo/ In the Middle East on a camel/ Running through the jungle, Rambo/ Liberace tango/ Swinging on a vine, mango/ So, call me Simba, little mama, 'cause Mufasa couldn't stop her ... ."

"It's produced by Sean Garrett and Alex the Kid," Minaj explained to MTV News recently in New York. "The beat, as soon as I heard it, I was in Africa being captivated by crazy drums. It's a very rare. ... You're not gonna get the song the first time you hear it. After the second or third time, you're gonna be like, 'Whoa, what is this?' It sounds nothing like anything that's out right now.

"It's so next-level futuristic," she continued. "Shout-out to Sean, because one thing, he's great with getting that other-level creativity that other people don't get. So, since I heard his writing style, I always wanted to collabo and work with him. I felt that he's one of the people that would get me, get my personality and get that on a record and choose a beat that would illustrate Nicki Minaj. And he did."

Garret told Mixtape Daily in February that "Massive Attack" is "explosive." "I can't wait for y'all to hear it, man," he said. "It's just given me a lot of time to create some real special music that's a lot different from what people expected.

"I'm really, really excited about Nicki because I think that what Nicki has understood is that she can do whatever she wants to do," he continued. "She's a dreamer just like myself. I feel like when you're creative ... it's basically like her whole image thing. She's taken her image to a whole other level with the whole Barbie thing. And I think she's very imaginative and her music's great and she's not scared of nothing. She's fearless. As long as you're fearless in life you can do anything."

Nicki and Sean shot the video for "Massive Attack" with director Hype Williams early this month in California. Amber Rose and the Birdman also make cameos.

"I kinda always like to do things in an unexpected fashion," Minaj said on the set. "I didn't want to shoot the typical new-artist vision. Thank god I have a wonderful label that stands behind me and my vision. I met Hype in a freakin' airport. I didn't recognize him without his dreads. We exchanged information, and it happened to be a week before I wanted to shoot a video. I told him the idea. Of course, I had to let Baby and Slim know and hope they would understand my expensive taste. It all came together."

Obama Makes History With New Healthcare Reform Bill

0

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 2:22 PM

President Barack Obama signed the sweeping health-care reform that has been the subject of nearly nonstop debate into law Tuesday. The law will bring near-universal coverage to millions of currently uninsured Americans, including many young people. Obama’s signing of the bill is the final step in a year-long battle that has defined the beginning of his presidency.

Even as 12 states now plan to file lawsuits over the bill, and Republicans still stand strongly against it, the signing was celebrated by Democrats. They believe that this law is the greatest social change in the last 50 years.

“It’s been easy at times to doubt our ability to do such a big thing, such a complicated thing, to wonder if there are limits to what we as a people can still achieve,” Obama said.

The new law, which had passed the Senate last Dec. 24, passed after a very close vote in the House of Representatives Sunday. The final $940 billion bill is expected to extend health insurance coverage to 32 million additional Americans. It also will force Americans to carry some form of health insurance or pay a fine.

Obama added, “I’m signing this reform bill into law on behalf of my mother, who argued with insurance companies even as she battled cancer in her final days.”

Many of the plan’s goals will begin to take shape over the next four years, which has drawn some criticism from liberals, to which Obama also responded during the signing, “It will take four years to implement fully many of these reforms, because we need to implement them responsibly.

“We need to get this right… this year, we’ll start offering tax credits to about 4 million small businessmen and women to help them cover the cost of insurance for their employees. This year, tens of thousands of uninsured Americans with preexisting conditions, the parents of children who have a preexisting condition, will finally be able to purchase the coverage they need. And this year, young adults will be able to stay on their parents’ policies until they’re 26 years old. That happens this year.”

This is important to many college students.  Students who graduate from college will now be allowed to remain on their parents’ health insurance policies longer, so that they can get coverage while they look for a job and begin to build a life of their own.

However, many remain skeptical of the bill, arguing that work is necessary before the bill is fair for all Americans.

ODU Suffer Devastating Loss...But Fans Are Still Proud

0

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 10:47 AM

Even though ODU is officially out of the NCAA Tournament after their 76-68 loss to No. 3 seed Baylor, fans still have pride for their Monarchs.

The first half proved to be disappointing for the Monarchs.  The Monarchs trailed the Bears the entire time; at one point as much as 14 points.  However, students never gave up hope that their team will upset Baylor and advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

In true Monarch fashion, the team made an impressive comeback during the second half.  Kent Bazemore threw down a dunk at the start of the second half that closed the gap between Baylor and ODU.  Baylor's lead cut from eight, to six, to three.  It was anybody's game.

At one point, the Monarchs took the lead over the Bears.

However, the Bears came back and reclaimed the lead.  There was not enough time for the Monarchs to come back.  By the time the buzzer sounded, ODU trailed Baylor by 8 points...making the final score 76-68.  Even though a lot of hearts were broken, there is still a sense of pride amongst ODU fans.  At least we made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament...how often does that happen?

And hey, at least Kansas lost :)

MONARCHS HEAD TO NEW ORLEANS TO FACE NOTRE DAME IN 1ST ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT

0

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 11:08 AM

ODU Fans filled up the Webb Center on Sunday night anxiously awaiting the news of where the Monarchs will play their first game of the NCAA Tournament.

It was announced that on Thursday ODU will be headed to New Orleans to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first round of NCAA action.

ODU was awarded an 11 seed, while Notre Dame was awarded a 6 seed.  While the Monarchs are the underdogs in this game, it is not completely out of the question that they will upset the Fighting Irish, just like they did with Georgetown in December.

Many ODU students are already taking advantage of this rare opportunity and are planning road trips to cheer on the Monarchs in N'awlins.  The game will tip off at 12:25 PM on Thursday.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my team will pull through and advance to the next round!!!

Massive 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Ravages Chile, 214 Dead

0

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 2:30 PM

CONCEPCION, Chile (Reuters) - One of the world's most powerful earthquakes in a century battered Chile on Saturday, killing at least 214 people, knocking down buildings and triggering a tsunami that threatened Pacific coastlines as far away as Hawaii and Russia.

Buildings caught fire, bridges collapsed and debris blocked streets across swathes of central Chile, but the initial death toll was relatively low from a quake packing many times more power than the one that devastated Haiti last month.

A 15-storey building collapsed in Concepcion, the closest major city to the epicentre, and overturned cars lay scattered below a fallen overpass in the capital Santiago. Telephone and power lines went down, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and loss of life.

The government said at least 214 people were killed in the 8.8-magnitude quake, which struck at 3:34 a.m. sending people rushing from their beds and onto the streets in fear, hugging each other and crying.

"It came in waves and lasted so long. Three minutes is an eternity. We kept worrying that it was getting stronger, like a terrifying Hollywood movie," said Santiago housewife Dolores Cuevas.

One emergency official said the number of deaths was unlikely to increase dramatically, and a U.S. Geological Survey researcher attributed the low toll to Chile's solid building standards.

But it was the fifth-largest earthquake since 1900 and dealt a blow to the economy and infrastructure of the world's No. 1 copper producer and one of Latin America's most developed and stable countries.

"This will be a major blow to the country's infrastructure; there has been major damage to roads, airports, which are now suspended, ports and also in housing," Chilean President-elect Sebastian Pinera said.

The quake halted operations at two oil refineries and two major copper mines and the government said an estimated half a million homes were severly damaged.

President Michelle Bachelet said a huge wave hit the Juan Fernandez islands, an archipelago where Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was marooned in the 18th century, inspiring the novel Robinson Crusoe.

"There was a series of waves that got bigger and bigger, which gave people time to save themselves," pilot Fernando Avaria told TVN television by telephone from the main island. Three people were killed and four missing there, he said.

Tsunami warnings were posted around the Pacific, including the U.S. state of Hawaii, Japan and Russia. The U.S. Navy said it was pulling six ships out of Hawaii's Pearl Harbor ahead of the tsunami, which was expected to hit the island at heights of up to 8 feet (2.4 meters).

Unusually big waves battered Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, where residents were moved to higher ground as a precaution.

Bachelet said residents were evacuated from coastal areas of Chile's remote Easter Island, a popular tourist destination in the Pacific famous for its towering Moai stone statues.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 70 miles (115 km) northeast of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles (35 km).

An earthquake of magnitude 8 or over can cause "tremendous damage," the USGS says. The January 12 quake that devastated Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince and killed well over 200,000 people was measured as magnitude 7.0.

****OFFICIAL BLACK EYED PEAS CONCERT REVIEW****

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 10:30 PM

On Monday night, the three time Grammy-award winning Black Eyed Peas took the stage at Hampton Coliseum.  Special guests included up-and-coming "party electro-hop" group LMFAO and rap sensation Ludacris.  If I had to describe the show in one word it would be AMAZING. Easily one of the BEST concerts I've ever been to.  From start to finish, the energetic atmosphere in that arena made it feel like it was a Saturday night instead of a cold, dreary Monday night.

LMFAO took the stage around 7:30 PM.  Their set was short but sweet.  They did 5 songs from their 2009 EP Party Rock, which included their hits "I'm in Miami, Bitch", "La La La" and their latest single with Lil Jon entitled "Shots".  I'm willing to bet that quite a few attendants didn't even know who LMFAO were, but that didn't matter.  Their energetic performance, which had a lot of dancing and crowd participation, got everyone HYPED.  Since the Hampton Coliseum was burning up, and people were working up a sweat with all that dancing, LMFAO threw out what looked to be complimentary washcloths.  In typical LMFAO fashion, each member wore loud neon clothes that clashed and shirts that promoted their songs.  Tonight, a shirt that had "I'm in Miami, Bitch" on it was worn. The song that got the crowd pumped up the most was definitely "Shots".  I thought it was really cool how the screens had the lyrics to their songs that people could sing along.  The integration of awesome lighting, crazy dancing, and a stellar DJ made for a great opening to the concert.  Here's a montage of the LMFAO set.

Up next to take the stage was LUDA. When he took the stage EVERYONE rose to their feet and screamed.  He started off his set with an appropriate concert starter "Stand Up". After that, he introduced the next song by talking about how he represents the "Dirty South".  He said "I went from ATL to Hampton VA" which had everyone going nuts.  It made for a great transition into "Southern Hospitality".  After that he performed "Area Codes".  As an intro to the song,  Luda talked how beautiful the women from the 757 are.  You can imagine the ladies went C-R-A-Z-Y!  During the actual song, he had the crowd shout "hoes" over and over, since the song's famous line is "I've got different hoes in different area codes".  Speaking of hoes, the next song he performed was "You's a Ho".  That had the crowd getting HYPE as they chanted along "You's a Ho...You's a Ho...You's a Ho...I said that You's a Ho".  Other songs that he performed included his 2005 hit "Pimpin All Over the World", "Act a Fool" and "Shake Your Money Maker".  The crowd went ape$&*# over Luda's throwback "What's Your Fantasy".  Even the 13 year olds with their parents sitting in front of me were singing along.  Anybody else find it disturbing that they were chanting "Backseat...windows up...that's the way we like to.." yeah ya'll know the rest. I'm sure their parents LOVED that haha. The song that got the crowd going the most was Luda's latest hit "How Low".  I thought he was going to end with that song, but he came back for an encore with "Move Bitch".  Perfect ending to a perfect set.

What was unexpected was that he covered Usher's smash "Yeah!".  He worked it out though.  That was the one song that had everyone singing along...from the youngest kids to the oldest granny's (and yes I did see a couple senior citizens in the audience).  I'm sure they loved all of Luda's profanity and the scantily clad dancers gyrating on stage LOL.  That was one drawback to the concert.  There were quite a few children in the audience.  Luda's set was definitely inappropriate for them.  Then again, it is Ludacris, what else do you expect?   I was hoping that his 45 minute set would last longer.  There are so many great Luda songs it's impossible to cover them all.  I was hoping to hear "What Them Girls Like", "Get Back" and how can you have a Luda concert WITHOUT "Rollout"?!  Here's a montage of the Luda set that I found on YouTube just in case you missed the show...

After a long intermission that seemed like it took FOREVER (ok, maybe 20 minutes) the Black Eyed Peas took the stage.  Let me just say this...the opening was EPIC. Under a plethora of lights, dramatic music, and smoke, each member of the BEP dramatically took the stage one-by-one.  This is one of those things that you have to see.  As I predicted, they started the set with "Let's Get It Started".  Here's the epic opening...

After "Let's Get It Started" they performed another song from their smash The E.N.D.  From what I hear, it's going to be their next single.  So excited about that, this song is definitely one of my favorites from the album. That honor went to..."Rock Your Body".  I loved the robots that came out and danced on stage.

Another E.N.D. smash, "Meet Me Halfway", followed that.  What was most epic about that song's performance was the fact that Will.I.Am was hanging on a string.  When he did his verse he flew from one end of the stage to the other.  You can see that here...

Who knew Will.I.Am had piano skills?  He played "Alive" on the piano.  That was pretty tight.  It was cute how Fergie and Will played it up like he was singing that song to her.  Then Fergie said "You say I make you feel alive Will.I.Am.  Phunk is nothing is action is action.  And I'll tell you one thing, you WON'T phunk with my heart!" Awesome transition to lead into "Don't Phunk With My Heart".

Will.I.Am had a solo freestyle where he would rap about messages that were scrolled on the screen that the audience texted in.  He definitely proves that he has emcee skills.  Why his solo album wasn't more successful is beyond me.

The next two songs were the smash hits "Imma Be" and "My Humps".  Those had the crowd going WILD.

Up next each member of the Black Eyed Peas had their own individual solos.  I thought that was great because so many people focus on just Fergie.  It gave each member their own moment to shine.  Apl D came first.  To pay homage to his Filipino heritage, he did a freestyle rap to the hit "Calabria" and other Asian inspired beats.  The next solo was even hotter.  Taboo did his thing on a flying motorcycle.  Yes I said that right...a flying motorcycle.  While he is probably the least known Black Eyed Peas member, that definitely garnered attention and gave him great exposure.

Of course the next solo was Fergie.  To my surprise she performed some solo material.  Her solo set consisted of "Fergalicious", "Glamorous" and "Big Girls Don't Cry".  I was shocked and bummed that Luda didn't come out to rap his part in "Glamorous".  "Big Girls Don't Cry" was definitely a surreal moment in the concert.  Before breaking into that song, Fergie showed a vulnerable moment when she said that she hears people talking crap about her all the time, which had the crowd booing that and people yelling "We love you Fergie"!  She gave a sincere thanks to the fans which had the crowd erupt in even louder screams.  It was such a cliche concert moment, but still awesome hearing everyone singing along with their lighters.

Next was the hottest solo set of the night.  Will.I.Am came out and did a DJ set.  Instead of writing about it, I'm just gonna show ya'll the video so you can see for yourselves how HOT it was. WOW.

What followed the DJ set was not one of my fave BEP songs.  "Now Generation" was performed.  I guess to keep with the futuristic theme of their show and appeal to the younger demographic.  Perhaps another song could have taken its place...like one of their older hits like "Hey Mama" or "Shut Up".  I missed not hearing their older stuff during the show.  But I digress.

Speaking of older songs, "Pump It" was performed next.  It featured their guitar player playing the "Misirlou" riff (you know the theme from Pulp Fiction?).

The BEPs first break-out hit "Where is the Love?" followed that.  It would have been nice to have mention the military since it is so prevalent here.  Anyway, it was pretty awesome.  I loved the fact that after they performed the song, they instructed the audience to have their lighters/cell phones shining and wave their hands in the air.  There was a light show all around the coliseum moving to the beat of the music.  That was really neat.

The last two songs were their two 2009 smashes.  "Boom Boom Pow" really had the crowd pumped.  The last song of the night was...you can imagine..."I Gotta Feeling" which is their biggest hit to date.  The crowd went bananas and was singing along.  Also, at the end confetti came up from different points in the arena and was flying everywhere.  It really gave off a party atmosphere, and was an epic ending to an epic show.

Three killed in University of Alabama shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - Three faculty members at the University of Alabama in Huntsville were killed on Friday when a biology professor started shooting during a faculty meeting, police and university officials said.
Three other faculty staff members were wounded in the shooting at the university's Shelby Center science and technology building.
Huntsville police and a university spokesman said the suspected shooter, a female faculty member, was arrested, and a man was also detained.
Another university official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters the female suspect arrested was Dr. Amy Bishop, a Harvard University-trained biology professor.
The Huntsville Times published a photograph of the blond-haired suspect, dressed in blue jeans and a gray jersey, being led to a police car by an armed policewoman.
CNN's Alabama affiliate said the suspect had been told before the shooting that she was being denied tenure.
"There was a shooting at the University of Alabama at Huntsville between 4:05 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. There are three fatalities and three critical injuries and the suspect is in custody. The campus is in lockdown. We are working to save these lives," Trent Willis, chief of staff and communications for the City of Huntsville, told Reuters.
Huntsville police said all of the dead were faculty members.
"I heard three shots and screaming," Melanie Gates, an engineering student at the campus, told Reuters.
She was near the exit of the Shelby Center when the shootings happened and she said the sound of the shots appeared to come from the third floor, where the faculty meeting was taking place.
There have been a number of deadly school shootings in the United States in recent years, including a rampage at Virginia Tech University in 2007 when a student killed 33 people, including himself.

The Soul Summit or ISMS as it has become known, is the largest music conference in the world dedicated to the Independent Soul genre with an emphasis on culture, lifestyle and business networking. For details visit www.soulmusicsummit.net.

Registrants for ISMS will be able to participate in PVIFF workshops providing direct contact with film and TV business leaders creating opportunities for original collaborations and music licensing. The 2009 PVIFF featured Malcolm Lee - Director, Roger Bobb - Executive Producer Tyler Perry Productions and Spike Lee Protégé, Jeff Byrd.

“We are very excited about our strategic alliance this year with the Peachtree Village International Film Festival.” said Terry Bello, ISMS Executive Producer and Creator. “We are confident that through this collaboration Soul Summit participants will develop strategic creative relationships that will impact the overall commercial viability for Soul Music, bringing a new level of awareness and attention to this community of artists who regularly lack this level of access.”

The International Soul Music Summit began in 2006 as The Soul Summit under the direction of veteran Radio Programmer/host Terry Bello with a volunteer staff and 500 participants. With global influence, past sponsor participants have included The Recording Academy, SoundExchange, HBO, The BBC, and The US Census Bureau.

Conceived as a globally influenced, urban focused music forum to showcase new and emerging Neo-Soul artists and discuss trends in Soul Music, the first conference was launched in only four weeks proving an existence of a pent up demand for a conference of this kind. . The marketplace had just begun to notice the shift of artists from Major record labels to Independent operations. Remaining an industry leader on this issue, ISMS has continued to be a platform to introduce artists to emerging methods and technologies that allow Independent artists to promote and market their music.

The edge on new marketing tactics and forward thinking concepts has drawn a wide variety of artists in various stages of their careers to the ISMS. One supporter since its inception, and 2009 ISMS Conference Headliner, Eric Roberson – universally acknowledged as the most successful Indie Soul artist in the USA - was nominated for a Grammy® Award in the Best Urban Alternative Performance category this past year.
