Massive 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Ravages Chile, 214 Dead

CONCEPCION, Chile (Reuters) - One of the world's most powerful earthquakes in a century battered Chile on Saturday, killing at least 214 people, knocking down buildings and triggering a tsunami that threatened Pacific coastlines as far away as Hawaii and Russia.

Buildings caught fire, bridges collapsed and debris blocked streets across swathes of central Chile, but the initial death toll was relatively low from a quake packing many times more power than the one that devastated Haiti last month.

A 15-storey building collapsed in Concepcion, the closest major city to the epicentre, and overturned cars lay scattered below a fallen overpass in the capital Santiago. Telephone and power lines went down, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and loss of life.

The government said at least 214 people were killed in the 8.8-magnitude quake, which struck at 3:34 a.m. sending people rushing from their beds and onto the streets in fear, hugging each other and crying.

"It came in waves and lasted so long. Three minutes is an eternity. We kept worrying that it was getting stronger, like a terrifying Hollywood movie," said Santiago housewife Dolores Cuevas.

One emergency official said the number of deaths was unlikely to increase dramatically, and a U.S. Geological Survey researcher attributed the low toll to Chile's solid building standards.

But it was the fifth-largest earthquake since 1900 and dealt a blow to the economy and infrastructure of the world's No. 1 copper producer and one of Latin America's most developed and stable countries.

"This will be a major blow to the country's infrastructure; there has been major damage to roads, airports, which are now suspended, ports and also in housing," Chilean President-elect Sebastian Pinera said.

The quake halted operations at two oil refineries and two major copper mines and the government said an estimated half a million homes were severly damaged.

President Michelle Bachelet said a huge wave hit the Juan Fernandez islands, an archipelago where Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was marooned in the 18th century, inspiring the novel Robinson Crusoe.

"There was a series of waves that got bigger and bigger, which gave people time to save themselves," pilot Fernando Avaria told TVN television by telephone from the main island. Three people were killed and four missing there, he said.

Tsunami warnings were posted around the Pacific, including the U.S. state of Hawaii, Japan and Russia. The U.S. Navy said it was pulling six ships out of Hawaii's Pearl Harbor ahead of the tsunami, which was expected to hit the island at heights of up to 8 feet (2.4 meters).

Unusually big waves battered Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, where residents were moved to higher ground as a precaution.

Bachelet said residents were evacuated from coastal areas of Chile's remote Easter Island, a popular tourist destination in the Pacific famous for its towering Moai stone statues.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 70 miles (115 km) northeast of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles (35 km).

An earthquake of magnitude 8 or over can cause "tremendous damage," the USGS says. The January 12 quake that devastated Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince and killed well over 200,000 people was measured as magnitude 7.0.

****OFFICIAL BLACK EYED PEAS CONCERT REVIEW****

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 10:30 PM

On Monday night, the three time Grammy-award winning Black Eyed Peas took the stage at Hampton Coliseum.  Special guests included up-and-coming "party electro-hop" group LMFAO and rap sensation Ludacris.  If I had to describe the show in one word it would be AMAZING. Easily one of the BEST concerts I've ever been to.  From start to finish, the energetic atmosphere in that arena made it feel like it was a Saturday night instead of a cold, dreary Monday night.

LMFAO took the stage around 7:30 PM.  Their set was short but sweet.  They did 5 songs from their 2009 EP Party Rock, which included their hits "I'm in Miami, Bitch", "La La La" and their latest single with Lil Jon entitled "Shots".  I'm willing to bet that quite a few attendants didn't even know who LMFAO were, but that didn't matter.  Their energetic performance, which had a lot of dancing and crowd participation, got everyone HYPED.  Since the Hampton Coliseum was burning up, and people were working up a sweat with all that dancing, LMFAO threw out what looked to be complimentary washcloths.  In typical LMFAO fashion, each member wore loud neon clothes that clashed and shirts that promoted their songs.  Tonight, a shirt that had "I'm in Miami, Bitch" on it was worn. The song that got the crowd pumped up the most was definitely "Shots".  I thought it was really cool how the screens had the lyrics to their songs that people could sing along.  The integration of awesome lighting, crazy dancing, and a stellar DJ made for a great opening to the concert.  Here's a montage of the LMFAO set.

Up next to take the stage was LUDA. When he took the stage EVERYONE rose to their feet and screamed.  He started off his set with an appropriate concert starter "Stand Up". After that, he introduced the next song by talking about how he represents the "Dirty South".  He said "I went from ATL to Hampton VA" which had everyone going nuts.  It made for a great transition into "Southern Hospitality".  After that he performed "Area Codes".  As an intro to the song,  Luda talked how beautiful the women from the 757 are.  You can imagine the ladies went C-R-A-Z-Y!  During the actual song, he had the crowd shout "hoes" over and over, since the song's famous line is "I've got different hoes in different area codes".  Speaking of hoes, the next song he performed was "You's a Ho".  That had the crowd getting HYPE as they chanted along "You's a Ho...You's a Ho...You's a Ho...I said that You's a Ho".  Other songs that he performed included his 2005 hit "Pimpin All Over the World", "Act a Fool" and "Shake Your Money Maker".  The crowd went ape$&*# over Luda's throwback "What's Your Fantasy".  Even the 13 year olds with their parents sitting in front of me were singing along.  Anybody else find it disturbing that they were chanting "Backseat...windows up...that's the way we like to.." yeah ya'll know the rest. I'm sure their parents LOVED that haha. The song that got the crowd going the most was Luda's latest hit "How Low".  I thought he was going to end with that song, but he came back for an encore with "Move Bitch".  Perfect ending to a perfect set.

What was unexpected was that he covered Usher's smash "Yeah!".  He worked it out though.  That was the one song that had everyone singing along...from the youngest kids to the oldest granny's (and yes I did see a couple senior citizens in the audience).  I'm sure they loved all of Luda's profanity and the scantily clad dancers gyrating on stage LOL.  That was one drawback to the concert.  There were quite a few children in the audience.  Luda's set was definitely inappropriate for them.  Then again, it is Ludacris, what else do you expect?   I was hoping that his 45 minute set would last longer.  There are so many great Luda songs it's impossible to cover them all.  I was hoping to hear "What Them Girls Like", "Get Back" and how can you have a Luda concert WITHOUT "Rollout"?!  Here's a montage of the Luda set that I found on YouTube just in case you missed the show...

After a long intermission that seemed like it took FOREVER (ok, maybe 20 minutes) the Black Eyed Peas took the stage.  Let me just say this...the opening was EPIC. Under a plethora of lights, dramatic music, and smoke, each member of the BEP dramatically took the stage one-by-one.  This is one of those things that you have to see.  As I predicted, they started the set with "Let's Get It Started".  Here's the epic opening...

After "Let's Get It Started" they performed another song from their smash The E.N.D.  From what I hear, it's going to be their next single.  So excited about that, this song is definitely one of my favorites from the album. That honor went to..."Rock Your Body".  I loved the robots that came out and danced on stage.

Another E.N.D. smash, "Meet Me Halfway", followed that.  What was most epic about that song's performance was the fact that Will.I.Am was hanging on a string.  When he did his verse he flew from one end of the stage to the other.  You can see that here...

Who knew Will.I.Am had piano skills?  He played "Alive" on the piano.  That was pretty tight.  It was cute how Fergie and Will played it up like he was singing that song to her.  Then Fergie said "You say I make you feel alive Will.I.Am.  Phunk is nothing is action is action.  And I'll tell you one thing, you WON'T phunk with my heart!" Awesome transition to lead into "Don't Phunk With My Heart".

Will.I.Am had a solo freestyle where he would rap about messages that were scrolled on the screen that the audience texted in.  He definitely proves that he has emcee skills.  Why his solo album wasn't more successful is beyond me.

The next two songs were the smash hits "Imma Be" and "My Humps".  Those had the crowd going WILD.

Up next each member of the Black Eyed Peas had their own individual solos.  I thought that was great because so many people focus on just Fergie.  It gave each member their own moment to shine.  Apl D came first.  To pay homage to his Filipino heritage, he did a freestyle rap to the hit "Calabria" and other Asian inspired beats.  The next solo was even hotter.  Taboo did his thing on a flying motorcycle.  Yes I said that right...a flying motorcycle.  While he is probably the least known Black Eyed Peas member, that definitely garnered attention and gave him great exposure.

Of course the next solo was Fergie.  To my surprise she performed some solo material.  Her solo set consisted of "Fergalicious", "Glamorous" and "Big Girls Don't Cry".  I was shocked and bummed that Luda didn't come out to rap his part in "Glamorous".  "Big Girls Don't Cry" was definitely a surreal moment in the concert.  Before breaking into that song, Fergie showed a vulnerable moment when she said that she hears people talking crap about her all the time, which had the crowd booing that and people yelling "We love you Fergie"!  She gave a sincere thanks to the fans which had the crowd erupt in even louder screams.  It was such a cliche concert moment, but still awesome hearing everyone singing along with their lighters.

Next was the hottest solo set of the night.  Will.I.Am came out and did a DJ set.  Instead of writing about it, I'm just gonna show ya'll the video so you can see for yourselves how HOT it was. WOW.

What followed the DJ set was not one of my fave BEP songs.  "Now Generation" was performed.  I guess to keep with the futuristic theme of their show and appeal to the younger demographic.  Perhaps another song could have taken its place...like one of their older hits like "Hey Mama" or "Shut Up".  I missed not hearing their older stuff during the show.  But I digress.

Speaking of older songs, "Pump It" was performed next.  It featured their guitar player playing the "Misirlou" riff (you know the theme from Pulp Fiction?).

The BEPs first break-out hit "Where is the Love?" followed that.  It would have been nice to have mention the military since it is so prevalent here.  Anyway, it was pretty awesome.  I loved the fact that after they performed the song, they instructed the audience to have their lighters/cell phones shining and wave their hands in the air.  There was a light show all around the coliseum moving to the beat of the music.  That was really neat.

The last two songs were their two 2009 smashes.  "Boom Boom Pow" really had the crowd pumped.  The last song of the night was...you can imagine..."I Gotta Feeling" which is their biggest hit to date.  The crowd went bananas and was singing along.  Also, at the end confetti came up from different points in the arena and was flying everywhere.  It really gave off a party atmosphere, and was an epic ending to an epic show.

Three killed in University of Alabama shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - Three faculty members at the University of Alabama in Huntsville were killed on Friday when a biology professor started shooting during a faculty meeting, police and university officials said.
Three other faculty staff members were wounded in the shooting at the university's Shelby Center science and technology building.
Huntsville police and a university spokesman said the suspected shooter, a female faculty member, was arrested, and a man was also detained.
Another university official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters the female suspect arrested was Dr. Amy Bishop, a Harvard University-trained biology professor.
The Huntsville Times published a photograph of the blond-haired suspect, dressed in blue jeans and a gray jersey, being led to a police car by an armed policewoman.
CNN's Alabama affiliate said the suspect had been told before the shooting that she was being denied tenure.
"There was a shooting at the University of Alabama at Huntsville between 4:05 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. There are three fatalities and three critical injuries and the suspect is in custody. The campus is in lockdown. We are working to save these lives," Trent Willis, chief of staff and communications for the City of Huntsville, told Reuters.
Huntsville police said all of the dead were faculty members.
"I heard three shots and screaming," Melanie Gates, an engineering student at the campus, told Reuters.
She was near the exit of the Shelby Center when the shootings happened and she said the sound of the shots appeared to come from the third floor, where the faculty meeting was taking place.
There have been a number of deadly school shootings in the United States in recent years, including a rampage at Virginia Tech University in 2007 when a student killed 33 people, including himself.

“We are very excited about our strategic alliance this year with the Peachtree Village International Film Festival.” said Terry Bello, ISMS Executive Producer and Creator. “We are confident that through this collaboration Soul Summit participants will develop strategic creative relationships that will impact the overall commercial viability for Soul Music, bringing a new level of awareness and attention to this community of artists who regularly lack this level of access.”

VCU vs. ODU...The Rivalry Continues...

Despite the 10 inch snowfall that hit Richmond over the weekend, fans still made a point to load up the 4 wheel drive vehicles and brave the snowy conditions all the way down to the Siegel Center in order to see THE Basketball game of the season.  Nothing will stop em...the game still was SOLD OUT.  The ODU Monarchs took on the VCU Rams on Saturday.  It was back and forth throughout most of the game, but in the last half, the Monarchs just couldn't seem to get it together.  The Rams broke their 8 game winning streak by beating the Monarchs in a disappointing score of 70-58.

That makes the Monarchs record 18-7.  Not too shabby if I do say so myself :)

The Monarchs will continue to be on the road as they face JMU on Wednesday night.  For those that can't make the road trip up to Harrisonburg...which I'm guessing is the vast majority of Monarch fans...the game will be televised on WSKY 4 at 7:00 PM.  Score!

It's official...The Saints ain't the "Aint's" No More. The New Orleans Saints won its FIRST EVER Super Bowl title last night against the Indianapolis Colts.  It's so heartwarming that the Saints won...not only because of the fact that they were the "underdogs", but also because that the city itself has been through so much.  With Katrina ravaging the city 4 years ago, Americans wondered if New Orleans would ever bounce back.  Last night proved that New Orleans is BACK and BETTER THAN EVER.

After a slow 1st quarter start of being scoreless, the Saints came back with a vengeance during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter.  When everything was all said and done, The Saints ended up "galloping" all over the Colts with a final score of 31-17.  Drew Brees led the team to a well deserved victory, while also picking up the MVP award.  WHO DAT.

A Super Bowl blog would not be complete without the world-famous Super Bowl commercials.  I must admit that's the main reason I watched the game.  This year did not disappoint...there were some hilarious ads.  My personal favorite of the night were the Doritos ads.

Here's the one where the little boy slaps the guy...

"Keep your hands off my mama, keep your hands off my Doritos" LOL.

This one deserves an honorable mention.  This is the ad about the E-Trade babies. Milk-a-WHAT?

Now how bout that halftime show.  Ever since the "Nipplegate" scandal 6 years ago, the NFL has played it safe and had performances by classic rock artists that would appeal to the older viewers.  The Who are indeed rock legends, with awesome songs, but Daltrey sounded a bit gruff.   However, you have to take into account that Roger Daltrey is 65 years old.  They sounded alright despite the fact that they are past their prime.  They did a whole slew of their greatest hits, from "Behind Blue Eyes", "Pinball Wizard", "Who Are You", "Won't Get Fooled Again" and my personal favorite "Baby O'Riley".  The lights show was pretty awesome.  I think that the NFL should get somebody more relevant though, to appeal to all viewers...like the Black Eyed Peas or something.

All in all, it was a good Super Bowl.  Hopefully next year my dream will come true and the Dolphins will make it. Haha. Like that's really gonna happen!

Keep it classy,
Tbone

Sayonara Snow...Hello Rain!

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 9:52 AM

Last weekend, the 757 experienced a snowstorm of epic proportions for this area.  Everyone and their mama was rushing out to the nearest Farm Fresh to stock up on necessities to brave the storm...food, flashlights, water and lots and lots of beer :)  The actual storm consisting of heavy snow and howling wind gusts caused everyone to be trapped inside their apartment/dorm/house/box pretty much all weekend.  When everything was all said and done, snow totals reached an amount that has not been seen in this area since 1989!  Norfolk received between 7-8 inches of snow, Chesapeake saw anywhere from 6-7 inches, and Virginia Beach got slammed with a whopping 9 inches!  What did ODU students do to pass the time?  Why, they had snowball fights of course!  Several snow ball fights broke out in front of Webb Center.  One particular snow ball fight had as many as 300 students participating!  I did manage to get a video of a smaller snowball war going on that particular day, courtesy of Jenny de Jaager.

I feel like I live in Seattle with all this rain we've been getting.  This weekend is calling for even more rain!  Right now meteorologists are forecasting between 1-3 inches.  There is a huge possibility that some snow will be mixed in.  Will we get even more snow?  Exactly how much?  Only time will tell...

GRAMMY RECAP

1

Posted by WODU Radio | Posted in | Posted on 11:39 AM

Anybody catch the Grammy's this year? Nothing short of awesome. Even though I eat sleep and breathe music, I must admit I've missed out the last couple of years.  However, I couldn't miss it this year simply because 2009 has been such an awesome year for music.  Apparently I wasn't the only one who thought so.  The Grammy's was definitely a ratings-winner in its time slot.  The show had the highest ratings since 2004 with 25.8 million viewers.  2009 has been all about the successful comeback of pop/dance music, and the excessive use of Auto-Tune.  Love it or hate it you couldn't escape it.  Even artists that you normally wouldn't even dream would use it (Chris Cornell anybody?) hopped on the Auto-Tune bandwagon.

When thinking about the one artist that has defined 2009 two words come to mind...LADY GAGA. With a whopping FIVE #1 singles, it seemed like she was everywhere this year.  She may have some bizarre performances decked out in bizarre fashion, but that just makes her so damn entertaining.  Her duet with Elton John was AWESOME.  I absolutely loved their rendition of Elton John's smash "Your Song".  Not to mention, I also LOVE the fact that they were wearing matching shades. And who knew she could actually play piano?

The females definitely dominated the Grammy's this year.  Beyonce picked up a record 6 Grammy's (Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, Best Contemporary R&B Album).  I have a new found respect for her after what she did at the VMA's with Taylor Swift.  Very classy move.  She looked fantastic tonight and had an awesome performance.  She started off her performance with her hit ballad "If I Were a Boy", then definitely proved that she could rock out with her rendition of Alanis Morisette's 1995 smash hit "You Oughta Know".

The other female success story of the night was country-pop breakout artist Taylor Swift.  She picked up 4 Grammy's including Album of the Year for Fearless (which happened to be the biggest selling album of 2009), Best Female Country Vocal Performance, Best Country Song for "White Horse", and Best Country Album.  Is it just me or did Taylor's singing sound a bit...off? I wasn't really feeling the duet with the legendary Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame.  "You Belong With Me" seemed a bit juvenile for Stevie.  However, you gotta give her props for accomplishing so much at only 20 years old.

Speaking of country music, I'm so glad that the Zac Brown Band won the Best New Artist Award.  Whether you like country music or not, you can't deny that they have talent.  They've got that whole Jimmy Buffett jam band vibe down.  Their performance was pretty cool.  They did a patriotic tribute by singing "America the Beautiful" then launched into their smash hit "Chicken Fried" (one of my favorite songs of the past summer).  I must admit that I was a bit surprised that they actually won.  I thought that honor was going to go to Keri Hilson.

Young Money still dominated 2009.  Drake blew up out of nowhere.  The ex-Degrassi star followed in his mentor Lil Wayne's footsteps and dominated the hip-hop charts. Here is LiL Jimmy Brooks from his Degrassi days waaaay back in 2001

http://7.media.tumblr.com/Jnf00vG8dqcyai1lEwAXzKjLo1_400.jpg

Eminem had a successful comeback with Relapse.  Him, Drake, and Lil Wayne performed their hit single "Forever" MINUS Kanye.  After the stunt he pulled with Taylor Swift at the VMA's, I think it's safe to say that he is officially BANNED from attending any award shows...for now.  Despite the fact that half the words were bleeped out, it was a high-energy solid performance.

Moving on to rock, it was a pretty big night for that genre.  Kings of Leon had a well-deserved successful 2009.  After struggling for nearly 10 years, they've FINALLY crossed over to mainstream audiences.  If you haven't listened to their breakout album Only By the Night, I highly recommend it. Definitely one of the best albums of 2008-2009.  While "Sex on Fire" got some airplay, it wasn't until "Use Somebody" that people really took notice to the epicness that is Kings of Leon.  Apparently, the Grammy committee agreed since they won the award for Best Rock Song and Record of the Year for "Use Somebody", and Best Rock Performance.

Another rock band that had a somewhat successful 2009 was Green Day.  Although their album 21st Century Breakdown couldn't match the same success as their comeback smash that was 2004's American Idiot, it still picked up the award for Best Rock Album.  I loved their performance of "21 Guns" with the American Idiot Broadway cast (Green Day...having a Broadway musical...WHAT?!).  I actually thought it was better than the original.  You can check out that performance here...

Alright, I love Dave Matthews and all, but someone should seriously tell him to STAY AWAY FROM DRUGS.  While I'm not expecting him to be another Michael Jackson, that white boy dance was just a bit too much. Here is a glimpse of his spaztastic performance...

Speaking of Michael Jackson, what a touching tribute.  After his premature death back in June, the Grammy's had to do it big to honor his life.  It was nice to have his children speak on his behalf when he won his posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award.  They handled it really well...I don't even know if I could do what they did.  Also I have to mention the performance with powerhouse divas Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, and R&B stars Usher and the legendary Smokey Robinson. WOW.  I gotta admit I was tearing up.

Another touching moment of the show was the performance dedicated to the victims of the devastating Haiti earthquake.   Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli harmonized well together.  What beautiful voices.  Did you also know that Andrea Bocelli is blind?  That makes him even more incredible.  Here's the performance.  If you like what you hear, you can download this on iTunes and the proceeds will go towards helping the Haiti victims. There ya go...that can be your good deed for the day...

Alright, I've already written a book and a half.  I gotta wrap this up, otherwise I'd be here all day blogging about the Grammy's.  For a complete list of winners, you can hightail it to http://www.grammy.com for your 2010 Grammy fixation.

This has been a Grammy recap and you've just been T-boned. PEACE OUT!
